EID AL-FITR: AMBODE SENDS WISHES
By: Jumoke Olasoji
Muslims
everywhere are gearing up for the big annual celebration, Eid al-Fitr, which
follows hot on the heels of Ramadan.
In
celebration of this year’s EID-AL-FITR, The Governor of Lagos State, Mr.
Akinwunmi Ambode sends his Eid-Al-Fitr wishes to celebrate the season with muslim
faithfuls.
The celebration is one of two holy days of the year, the other being
Eid al-Adha, which occurs later in
the year. The
two holidays may have similar names, but their origins are very different and
their customs are too.
Eid
al-Fitr arrives on Friday 15 June this year. For most it begins with
morning prayers and lead into a big family get-together for a celebratory meal,
as well as the exchange of gifts.
Paying
zakat or giving to charity is a key feature of this festival, referred to as
‘big Eid’, which marks the end of Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting.
Eid
ul-Adha, meanwhile, means ‘Feast of the Sacrifice’ and is the biggest
celebration for Muslims, taking place over several days. This year it lasts
from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 August.
It
honours the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son to show submission to
Allah’s command.
We greet our Muslim Friends and readers ‘Eid
Mubarak’ (have a blessed Eid).
