MINIMUM WAGE CONTROVERSY: WHICH WAY NIGERIA?
Jumoke Olasoji
The subject of minimum wage is an hot topic generating views and controversy in the Nigerian media. The topic has generated reactions from across the country as it affect every sector of the economy and almost every resident of the country.
On #TVCTHISMORNING, the subject was up for discuss and callers called in for their views. A caller by the name Kennedy from Port-Harcourt suggested that labour should go on strike not for minimum wage but for the outrageous amount politicians collect without justification.
Another caller, Comrade Ayo from Osun State stated that labour should agitate higher standard of living, lower cost of living. With this in place, he argued, even fifteen thousand naira minimum wage would be enough. But because we buy basic amenities such as education, transportation, healthcare, housing that are supposed to be supplied by government at such outrageous amount, even hundred thousand naira minimum wage cannot be enough.
Mariam from Apapa called for review in the labour laws. She said the politicians are 'our enemies'. She highlighted the need to have the nation go on standstill similar to the experience of January 2012, the one we had over removal of fuel subsidy by the Jonathan led administration.
These and many others are the varied views of Nigerians on the #MinimumWageControversy.
Is it Review of Labour laws in Nigeria? Are our politicians really our enemies? Or holding the country to a stadstill in protest? Which way Nigeria?
