HAPPENING NOW: LAGOS 8TH ASSEMBLY THIRD YEAR ANNIVERSARY

In attendance are top government officials some of whom are; Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Umar Naa'ba, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola among others.
In his welcome address, the Speaker of Lagos Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa noted that the 8th Assembly has successfully passed 13 bills into law and 45 resolutions in the areas of Environment, Power, Electricity generation and distribution, Energy, Health among others.
Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, after recognition of guests, called for observance of a minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives and properties in the Otedola Bridge tragedy yesterday where about 57 vehincles and 9 people are reported burnt beyond recognition.
In his own welcome address, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode welcomed and thanked the Vice President and other officials especially the 8th Legislative Assembly Members for their support and job well done.
Speaking on the theme " Strengthening Legislative Institution, the Panacea for Enduring Democracy" with his keynote address, titled " Stronger State and Eradication of Poverty", the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo made known with facts, figures and Court declarations and judgements that the Legislature is the centre of Democracy, centre of the State and government at large, where the legislature is no more an island of democracy. He stated further that the action of the State, through its strong legislature can eradicate poverty.
"To achieve this objective of poverty eradication, we need stronger and independent states who in turn create Local Governments, Courts and Tribunals. Therefore, State must have more powers.
"Also there is a need to ensure that Education, Healthcare and enabling Environment are put in place to achieve this".
