NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SIEGE: NEW DG EMERGE, DAURA DISAPPEARS
By: Jumoke Olasoji
Mr Matthew
Benabafa Seiyefa has been inaugurated as the Acting Director-General for the State Security
Service (SSS) in Abuja.
This appointment follows the unceremonious dismissal of the ex DG, Lawal Daura who was fired yesterday on the order of theActing President, Yemi Osinbajo in relation with the siege laid on the National
Assembly in the early hours of Tuesday.
The handing over ceremony which held
at the Yellow House headquarters of the State Security Service agency, had
members and staff of the agency in attendance irrespective of Mr Daura’s
absence.
Mr. Seiyefa until his appointment
was the most senior official at the SSS after Lawal Daura.
Mr Seiyefa is an indigene of Bayelsa State. He
was the director in charge of the Institute of Security Studies (ISS), established
in 2005 as the cardinal training institution for the SSS.
Backed with 34 years of experience gained in
service from Osun, Akwa Ibom and Lagos States, the new DG is also a member of
the National Institute, having studied at the National Institute for Policy and
Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru.
However, in another development, the whereabouts of the ex DG is currently unknown. It is not clear if he is truly under house arrest as we were informed by some insiders at the SSS. We are yet to verify this.
Also, expressions of relief were written and clearly expressed on the faces of members of staff of the SSS at the dismissal and sudden end of the ex DG’s three year reign whose tenure was said to be marked by ‘high-handedness and autocracy’.
He was said to have denied five senior officials their official quarters in Abuja, but allocated same facilities to his relations who are not in any way officials of the agency.
Mr Daura was also said to have cancelled the regular meeting of the DG with state directors, the traditional channel for briefing his office on security issues around the country and the forum for top level evaluation of operations.
He also did not appoint spokesperson for the agency, thereby denying the public timely and undenied access to information about the Agency throughout his tenure.
Mr. Osinbajo had earlier met with Mr. Seiyefa at the presidential villa shortly after sacking Mr.
Daura, and directing him to hand over to the most senior official in the service.
